Quality and Testing of Electronic and Electrical Products

What is the common inspection checklist of electronic product?

KOL Quality has a general checklist for electronic products, and it includes the following checkpoints:

Factory Situation: This refers to the overall condition and management of the manufacturing facility, including cleanliness, organization, and adherence to production protocols.

Warehouse Situation: We check the overall condition of the warehouse especially temperature and humidity.

Production Quantity Status: This refers to the actual status of the production volume, ensuring that the number of units produced matches the order quantity.

Verification of the Assortment: This involves checking that the product mix is correct as per the purchase order, including variations like color, size, and model.

Carton and Packaging Status: This checkpoint ensures that the cartons and packaging materials are in good condition, without damage, and suitable for transit.

Packaging Check: This step verifies that the correct printing of packaging and the product is packaged properly.

Shipping Mark: Verifying that the shipping marks on the packaging are correct and clearly visible for identification and handling during transit.

Logo and Labeling: Ensuring that the product’s branding, including logos and labels, are correctly applied and meet brand standards.

Size & Measurement: This involves measuring the dimensions of the carton, packaging and product to ensure they match the specifications.

Weight: The product’s weight is checked to confirm it aligns with the expected weight for shipping and product use.

User Manual: Checking that the user manual is present, accurate, and comprehensible, providing proper guidance for the use of the product.

Accessories: Ensuring that all the additional components and accessories are included as per the product specifications.

Product Appearance: This is an inspection of the product’s visual aspects, ensuring there are no cosmetic defects and that it meets aesthetic standards.

Basic Function Test: A series of tests to verify that the product’s basic functions operate correctly.

Safety Test: These tests ensure that the product meets all required safety standards and regulations.

Performance Test: This involves testing the product under various conditions to ensure it performs as expected over time. This could be destructive test.

Critical Component Check: A detailed inspection of the key components that are the same as the testing report.

Assembly: This checkpoint verifies that the product has been assembled correctly with all parts securely in place.

These checkpoints are designed to ensure that the product meets quality standards and is ready for distribution to consumers. Each step is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the product from the manufacturing floor to the end-user.

Two ways to the check the quality of electronics and their pros and cons

Sampling & AQL

Instead of examining every single item, which can be time-consuming and costly, a sample is taken and inspected to assess the overall batch's quality. Sampling is a statistical process used in quality control where a subset of items from a larger batch is tested to make inferences about the quality of the entire batch. AQL, defined in ISO 2859-1, determines the maximum number of defective items that can be considered acceptable in a sample size. If the number of defects exceeds this limit, the entire batch may be rejected.

EOL End of Line Inspection

End of Line (EOL) Inspection in electronics manufacturing is a critical quality control process that occurs at the final stage of the production line. In the end of line, we check for the functionality, in-circuit testing, critical components and packaging. It is essential for ensuring that every product leaving the production line meets the required quality standards and is same for consumer use.

 ProsCons
Sampling & AQL Inspection

Efficiency – sampling is more time efficient as we inspect a representative subset rather than every unit.

Cost effective – It is less costly than inspecting every single unit.

Statistical Reliability

Risk of Non-Detection – There is a risk that defects in non-sampled units may go undetected.
EOL End of Line Inspection

Thoroughness – It often involves 100% inspection of products.

Catch all defects – it ensures every unit is checked, which is critical for high value and safety critical products.

Immediate feedback – provides instant feedback on the production line and allowing for quick corrections.

Time-consuming – Inspection every unit can consume a lot of time especially for large batches

Higher cost – inspector(s) follows the whole production process
